The therapeutic benefits of healing massage for those going through cancer are well documented, but at present, most spas in the UK turn away anyone who has been diagnosed with the condition.

The reason is that for many spas, insurance issues mean they cannot offer treatments to anyone going through treatment for cancer.

In order to resolve the dilemma and to allow spas around the UK to open their doors to those going through the cancer journey, Made for Life Organics have recently launched a Cancer Touch Therapy training course, the first of its kind to be fully accredited by the Complementary Therapy Association. The course enables any spa to offer treatments to those being treated for cancer. All profits from the training courses are going to their charity the Made For Life Foundation which supports those going through cancer.

“Speaking as someone who has benefitted from the treatments which are specially designed for anyone going through cancer, I can tell you that it is hugely beneficial,” says Diane Knight, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and who is now undergoing ‘maintenance’ chemotherapy to keep the condition at bay. “Medically I was very well supported and given all the relevant information about my treatment –- but what about emotional support? That was one of the key benefits of having the spa treatments. The gentle massage is an effective way to help cope with the stress and anxiety. It was hugely helpful for me.”

Amanda Winwood, MD of Made for Life Organics and Founder of the Made for Life Foundation said "It is shocking that many spas have turned people away whilst they are going through cancer. We believe that all spas should be accessible and through our work with the Made for Life Foundation (registered charity 1138846) we have for 15 years, consistently provided this using appropriate protocols combined with our 100% organic skincare and wellbeing range of products. This CMA accredited Cancer Touch Therapy training course enables spas, managers and therapists to confidently open their doors to anyone going through cancer and provide much needed support.

Made for Life Organics funded the development of this course and all profits from the course will go directly into the Made for Life Foundation (registered charity 1138846) to continue to support the complementary support services we offer though the charity."

The course was developed, taking advice from trained oncology massage teachers, advisors within the oncology team at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust and also Macmillan. Marc Innes, MISRM, MCMA and Founder of the School of Natural Therapies is the course lead trainer and gained accreditation for this course from the Complementary Medical Association (CMA).

“Having worked within the NHS for 22 years, I have combined this experience with my knowledge of anatomy, physiology and complementary therapies to draw on the psychological benefits of touch therapy — it has been an absolute pleasure to develop and write this training course. I’m looking forward to extending the training across the UK and launching in Cornwall.”

As well as being available in Made for Life spas such as our flagship spa at Una St Ives, the Cancer Touch Therapy course has already been implemented at luxury Hotel and Spa - the Royal Crescent in Bath and more and more spas around the country are training their staff so that those who are going through cancer can benefit from massage treatments. Most recenlty The Granary Spa in Kent have trained their teams in Cancer Touch Therapy.
