Summer’s here and although that’s a reason to celebrate, for many of us, it also brings with it the prospect of a few months of uncontrollable frizz! Our guide will help you to maintain that smooth, under control look this year…

Use hair oil!

The glands in our scalp produce natural oils that form a protective coating on each strand of hair. When the weather becomes warmer and more humid, these oils would normally offer natural frizz control. The problem is that traditional shampoos and conditioners strip the natural oils from our hair. Regularly using hair oil is a great way to re-introduce this natural frizz control, but the trick is to use hair oil properly so that it doesn’t leave your hair feeling dull, heavy and greasy.

Here’s how to do it:

  • After washing your hair at night, gently squeeze your hair with a soft towel to remove excess water. Don’t rub your hair with the towel as the friction raises the cuticle, causing frizz. Avoid the hair dryer too, as this is also reducing the natural oils in your hair and damaging the hair shafts.

  • Pour out just a small amount of Head and Hair Oil (about a capful) onto your fingers and gently rub between your palms and gently massage it into your scalp and smooth down to the tips of your hair. The scalp massage stimulates follicles to stimulate healthy hair growth which done often will help to reduce the general breakages and split ends that cause frizziness. The oil smoothed into the rest of your hair will coat the shaft with oil but if left in for a while - ideally overnight - it will also moisturise and strengthen the hair shaft, to leave it stronger and protected from the elements.

  • Leave in the hair for about 20 minutes before washing out or, for a deeper treatment, cover the hair in a towel and leave overnight before washing out the next morning.

These are the botanicals and oils in our Head & Hair oil which make it particularly effective in strengthening hair and restoring strength and shine:

Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) flower oil: promotes hair growth and treats various hair problems like hair loss, alopecia and dandruff

Olea Europaea (Olive) fruit oil: Olive oil is actually used as a remedy for dandruff as it is good for the skin on the scalp and adds a little weight to broken, frizzy hair

Prunus Amygdalus (Sweet Almond) oil: Almond oil nourishes and strengthens your hair and is optimal for treating hair loss and damaged hair

Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) kernel oil: Apricot seed oil has oleic acid, which is an omega-9 fatty acid and a wonderful emollient that makes hair and scalp softer and more pliable

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) leaf extract & Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) leaf oil: Rosemary essential oil helps stimulate hair growth

Salvia Officinalis (Sage) leaf oil: Sage leaf oil can help balance scalp oils

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) seed oil: The antimicrobial properties of jojoba oil, combined with its moisturizing nature, conditions your follicles and scalp, keeping them healthy.

Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) leaf extract: Thyme is used to prevent hair loss and to promote hair growth

Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) germ oil: Wheat germ oil has emollient properties, to relieve dryness and add softness and moisture to your hair

Urtrica Dioica (Nettle) leaf extract: Nettle leaf extract strengthens the hair follicles and shaft and reduces oiliness, adding shine to dull hair

  • And this is the important step, which is the main area where people make mistakes with hair oil and end up with greasy, dull hair... DO NOT ADD WATER, ONLY USE SHAMPOO as you wash the oil out. Rather than getting your hair wet, shampoo the hair whilst it is still dry. This ensures that the fine layer of oil is removed, leaving your hair soft, strong and shiny.

  • When you have shampooed your hair and removed the outer layer of oil, rinse your hair with warm water.

Another simple tip if you have long hair, is to bundle your hair up in a neat bun if you are spending time outdoors. This offers protection from humidity and heat so that when you are indoors, you can let your smooth, shining mane of hair loose.
