What is Reiki?

In 1922, a Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui developed Reiki as a form of alternative medicine or therapy. It is based on what is known as palm healing or hands-on-healing with the idea being that the Reiki practitioner transfers ‘universal energy’ to help the body to heal and to reduce stress. There is no clinical research to support Reiki as an effective therapy. HOwever, since its inception in the 1920’s it  has become popular in cultures all around the world.

Since then, it has become popular in cultures around the world. Reiki practitioners use a technique they call palm healing or hands-on healing by which a "universal energy" is allegedly transferred through the palms of the practitioner to a patient in order to promote relaxation and holistic healing.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

During a Reiki session you will relax on a treatment bed, fully clothed and perhaps covered in a soft towl in a quiet, private treatment room. The Reiki practitioner will gently place their hands on your head, on your tummy or back, perhaps your feet, but without applying any pressure, or sometimes hands are held just off the body.

How does it feel?

It varies for different people. Many people report feelings waves of sensation through their body, commonly those being treated experience sensations of peace and wellbeing and find themselves deeply relaxed. Often you can feel very centred and calm afterwards, and sleep deeply the following night.
